- Automatic weight calculation based on brews
- Archive system for finished beans
- Photo attachments and ratings
- Freeze tracking for storing beans
- Ratings
Adding a Bean
Tap the + button in the Beans list to add a new coffee. Long-press it, or use the Add Bean button on the home screen, for the two automatic options:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add Bean Manually | Opens an empty form |
| Import from URL | Reads a roaster’s product page |
| Scan Coffee Bag | Reads the label from a photo |
See Filling the Form Automatically below. Whichever route you take, you can enter:
Basic Information
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The name of the coffee (required) |
| Roaster | Who roasted the coffee |
| Roast Level | Ultra-Light, Light, Medium-Light, Medium, Medium-Dark, or Dark |
| Roast Date | When the beans were roasted |
Origin Information
For both single-origin coffees and blends you can add detailed variety information:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Variety | Coffee variety (e.g., Bourbon, Gesha, Caturra) |
| Origin Country | Country of origin |
| Origin Region | Region within the country |
| Farmer | Farm or farmer name |
| Elevation | Growing elevation (e.g., 1500-1800 m.a.s.l.) |
| Process Method | Washed, Natural, Honey, etc. |
Purchase Information
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Weight per Bag | Weight of a single bag in grams |
| Number of Bags | How many identical bags purchased |
| Purchase Date | When you bought the beans |
| Price | Purchase price per bag |
Multi-Bag Support
When you buy multiple identical bags (same roast date), enter the number of bags and the weight per bag. The app calculates your total inventory automatically.
Additional Fields
- Tasting Notes: Flavor descriptors
- Personal Notes: Your observations
- Rating: 0-5 star rating
- SCA Score: SCA cupping score (0-100)
- Photo: Attach an image of the bag or beans
Keyboard Toolbar
The bean form shows a toolbar above the keyboard with chevrons that step through the fields in order and a Done button to dismiss the keyboard. The number pad fields, such as weight and price, have no return key of their own, so this is how you leave them.
Filling the Form Automatically
Typing out a bag’s details gets old fast, so Beanstats can read them for you from a product page or a photo of the bag. Both routes show you what was found before anything is saved, and everything stays editable afterwards.
Import from URL
- Long-press Add Bean and choose Import from URL
- Paste the link to the roaster’s product page, or tap Paste from Clipboard
- Tap Extract
- Review what was found, then tap Use Data to open the bean form pre-filled
Beanstats reads the structured product data most shops publish, which covers name, price, and weight reliably. On devices with Apple Intelligence, the page text is read as well, which usually adds roaster, origin, process, varieties, roast level, and tasting notes.
Scan Coffee Bag
- Long-press Add Bean and choose Scan Coffee Bag
- Take a photo of the label, or pick one from your library
- Tap Extract
- Review what was found, then tap Use Data
With Apple Intelligence available, the label is interpreted as a whole and the result is marked “Extracted with Apple Intelligence”. Without it, Beanstats falls back to plain text recognition, which picks up less and is marked as basic extraction.
What Gets Filled In
Name, roaster, roast level, whether it’s a blend or decaf, tasting notes, SCA score, price and currency, bag weight, product URL, and per-variety details such as origin country, region, processing method, elevation, farmer, and blend percentage.
Single-Origin vs. Blend
Toggle Is Blend to switch between modes:
Single-Origin
- One variety with detailed origin information
- Full origin details shown in the detail view
Blend
- Multiple varieties, each with their own origin info
- Enter percentage for each component (e.g., 60% Ethiopian, 40% Colombian)
- If no percentages are entered, they’re distributed equally
Bean Detail View
Tapping a bean shows a comprehensive detail view with:
Stats Cards
Remaining weight, usage percentage, and brew count.
Recent Brew Ratings
A line chart showing ratings of your last 5 brews with this bean (only shown if any rated brews exist).
Flavor Profile
An average taste profile shown as a radar chart, based on extraction grid data from your brews.
Best Recipe
Optimal brew parameters computed from your highest-rated brews. Shows dose, ratio, temperature, grind size, and time in a compact grid. When both espresso and filter brews exist, a segmented picker lets you switch between styles.
If the current bean has too few rated brews, the recommendation falls back to similar beans. Includes roast context (e.g., “Typical parameters for light roasts”).
Similar Beans
Shows up to 3 similar beans from your inventory with match percentage and match reason pills (same origin, similar taste, etc.). Only shown when 2+ non-archived beans exist.
Sorting
The bean list supports a Best Match sort option that ranks beans by preference score, using your brewing history and taste data.
Weight Tracking
Your remaining coffee weight is calculated automatically:
Remaining = Initial Weight - Weight Used in Brews - Frozen WeightEach time you log a brew, the coffee weight is deducted from your inventory. The bean list shows remaining weight with color indicators:
| Weight | Indicator |
|---|---|
| Normal | Standard text |
| Low (< 50g) | Orange text |
| Empty | Prompts to archive |
Archiving Beans
When you finish a bag of coffee:
- Swipe left on the bean and tap Archive
- Or wait for the prompt when your last brew depletes the bag
Archived beans are hidden from the default list but preserved for your history. Toggle Show Archived to view them again.
Duplicating Beans
When you buy the same coffee again:
- Swipe left on the bean and tap Duplicate
- A new entry is created with today’s purchase date
- Weight resets to the original amount
- All brews stay with the original bean
Freeze Tracking
For beans you want to freeze for later:
- Open a bean’s detail view
- Navigate to the Freezer section
- Tap Freeze Some Beans
- Enter the weight and container type
Each freeze entry gets a unique 5-character tag (e.g., “7HK3N”) that you can write on your container for easy identification.
Container Types
- Vacuum Bag
- Tube
- Ziploc Bag
- Container
- Original Bag
- Mason Jar
- Other
Thawing
When you’re ready to use frozen beans:
- Open the freeze entry
- Tap Thaw
- Enter the weight to thaw
You can partially thaw - the remaining frozen amount stays tracked.
Freeze Status Indicators
| Status | Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Fully frozen | Blue “Frozen” | All beans still frozen |
| Partially thawed | Orange “Partial” | Some beans have been thawed |
| Fully thawed | Gray “Thawed” | All beans have been thawed |
Thaw All & Start Brew
For single-dose frozen portions, you can quickly thaw and start brewing:
- Open the thaw form for a freeze entry
- Tap Thaw All & Start Brew
- The brew form opens with the bean pre-selected and the thawed weight pre-filled
- Complete your brew and save
This streamlines the workflow for frozen single-dose portions.
NFC Tags
If your device supports NFC, you can write the freeze entry to an NFC tag:
- Open the thaw form for a freeze entry
- Tap Write to NFC Tag
- Hold your phone near an NFC tag
Scanning the tag later opens the thaw form directly.
NFC Predose Tags
If your device supports NFC, you can write NFC tags with pre-dosed bean weight for quick brew setup:
- Open a bean’s detail view
- Tap the … menu
- Select Write NFC Tag
- Enter the pre-dosed weight, and optionally a grind size
- Tap Write to NFC Tag and hold your phone near an NFC tag
Scanning the tag later opens the brew form with the bean, weight, and grind size pre-filled.
The grind size is free-form text, such as Medium-fine or 22 clicks, and is useful when you grind ahead of time. It is optional, so tags written without one keep working as before. With a scale connected, you can weigh the dose straight into the writer instead of typing it.
Swipe Actions
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Delete | Permanently remove the bean |
| Archive/Unarchive | Move to/from archive |
| Duplicate | Create a copy with fresh inventory |
